In this edition of RSO Highlights, we look back at how Bali Process Members have come together through activities delivered under the RSO’s 2024–2026 Work Plan to strengthen regional cooperation to counter trafficking in persons and people smuggling, enhance cross-border information sharing and operational coordination, build frontline leadership and alumni networks across the region, and discuss crisis preparedness and shared responses to disaster and displacement in the Asia-Pacific.
This edition features the RSO Member State Spotlight: Indonesia, Regional dialogue and responses to maritime people smuggling in Southeast Asia, Legal identity as Southeast Asia's next big migration priority and efforts to strengthen law enforcement capacity to conduct online investigations into cyber-scam centres.
In this issue, we highlight practical and technical support provided by the RSO to strengthen cooperation on refugee protection and international migration, including trafficking in persons, people smuggling and related transnational crime.
In this issue, we spotlight the RSO’s week of activities held in June 2024 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The week acknowledged Indonesia’s pivotal role alongside Australia as Co-Chair of the Bali Process and its role in co-managing the RSO. Activities also supported the convergence of diverse Bali Process stakeholders, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise in the region.
In this issue, we spotlight Bali Process Member States’ efforts around cross-border collaboration— a cornerstone in addressing the complexities of large-scale irregular migration and related transnational crime in the region.

August 2023: This issue of RSO Highlights looks back on the launch of a new practitioner guide series to strengthen support to victims of trafficking, RSO training for frontline officers in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, which has seen increased numbers of refugees making dangerous sea crossings, and ongoing work to support Member States’ response to trafficking into online scam centres.
May 2023: Ministers and Senior Officials across Bali Process Member States gathered for the Eighth Bali Process Ministerial Conference in February 2023 and set out a new Strategy for Cooperation.
January 2023: We shine a spotlight on the nexus between digital technologies, trafficking in persons and people smuggling – a priority thematic area for the Regional Support Office (RSO) and Bali Process Member States.
October 2022: Bali Process 20th Anniversary event brings Member States back together to celebrate 20 years of The Bali Process and discuss regional priorities and challenges that have emerged around people smuggling and trafficking in persons.
June 2022: This issue includes updates on the Bali Process Civil Registration Assessment Toolkit, the RSO's Capacity building and training activities. It also includes publications updates for Corruption as a Facilitator of Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants and the RSO-NEXUS Practitioner Guide Series.
