Virtual Introductory Training Workshop on Digital Forensics in Trafficking in Persons Investigations

On November 25th, the RSO – in partnership with the Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation (JCLEC) – delivered a Virtual Introductory Training Workshop on Digital Forensics in Trafficking in Persons Investigations.

The workshop was delivered through JCLEC’s Online Delivery Model (ODM) using the Zoom platform, connecting the RSO with 26 law enforcement and government officials from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

As the use of technology is only increasing, it is vital for those involved in trafficking in persons cases to be aware of how human trafficking is facilitated in the virtual environment. This workshop contained three sessions aimed at equipping participants with the necessary knowledge and skills required to improve their detection and response to suspected trafficking cases that appear online.

Mr. Henry Saint-Fleur – who has experience working with digital crimes with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police – delivered the first two sessions on the dark web’s role in recruiting trafficking victims and how dating sites can be used to “advertise” potential victims. Pak Putu Eka from the Indonesian National Police delivered his session on cryptocurrency and how it is used in trafficking in persons transactions. Following the presentations, the participants were given the chance to talk and ask questions to the presenters during a short panel discussion.

The RSO would like to thank General Aby Nursentyanto (INP Executive Director of JCLEC), Federal Agent Greg Davis (AFP Executive Director of Programs of JCLEC), Mr. Henry Saint-Fleur, Pak Putu Eka, as well as all participants who were in attendance for participating in this workshop.

The RSO would also like to the JCLEC staff and interpreters for all their hard work in facilitating and ensuring the success of this workshop which has brought Indonesia and the RSO closer to our shared goal of combating people smuggling, trafficking in persons and related transnational crime.
